Whaler beam erection

Whaler beam erection

Internal struts are proposed in narrow excavations. Before these struts are installed, a horizontal member called whaler is placed against the soil support. Intermediate struts are then installed from whaler to whaler across the excavation.

Where retaining walls span vertically, whalers are needed to transfer loads to the struts, or to the anchors. Finds application in retaining contiguous piles along with combination system of prestressed rock/soil anchors or soil nails.
